Abstract

Universities are a major factor in education, knowledge generation and technology creation. Campus life typically takes place in a social environment influenced by university facilities, research institutes and local companies. Local communities dealing with campus related problems through innovative web-based services can provide valuable contributions for quality of life on a university campus. The paper gives insight into a campus community at the University of Bremen in Germany. Insights are divided into governance, communication and user engagement in the community. Furthermore, the chosen approach for the Bremen community is discussed in relation to elaborated approaches such as crowdsourcing and Living Labs. As main result of this work, recommendations for establishment and operation of similar innovation communities on a university campus are given.
