Abstract

This Article is focused on virtual and experimental methods of product development using the example of handling devices for textiles. The BIK is working on the product development of effectors for the production of fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP). Automation can help for lower product costs and increase the product quality of the FRP. Especially the handling process of technical textiles and the build-up of fibre structures represents a significant potential for automation. A particular challenge for the product development process of handling devices is determinated by the limp material characteristics of textiles. Because of this there is the need to use both virtual and experimental methods in the product development process. The material behaviour of textiles is very difficult to describe in a numerical model. These models quickly reach their limits, since they represent only limited dynamic process factors. Also an integration of the material models in the environment of a CAD system is currently difficult to implement. Therefore an experimental investigation of material behaviour under real conditions provides the opportunity to evaluate alternative concepts. A realistic scaling of the experimental devices is of particular importance. The product development process, especially in the scope of textiles, can only be successful in combination of virtual and experimental methods.
