Prof. Dr. Burkhard Lemper

Burkhard Lemper studied economics at the University of Münster and earned his doctorate at the University of Bremen with a thesis on competition in container handling in northwestern Europe. Since 2009, he has been managing director of the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) in Bremen and professor of maritime economics/operations at the University of Applied Sciences Bremen. In his more than 32-year career, he has led a large number of projects for national and international clients in the maritime industry, in particular for port authorities, terminals, shipyards, and shipping companies. He has worked on studies for the German transport ministries and the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, focusing on developments in the European and global transport markets, particularly container transport, port development projects, and feasibility studies, including cost-benefit analyses. He has written and published extensively on topics related to the maritime sector. Other important aspects of his research include cargo flow and market analyses, cargo flow simulation, and transport modeling. In recent years, Dr. Lemper's projects have also covered topics such as emissions, alternative fuels, and other environmental aspects.
