North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports
Hydrogen will play a central role in the decarbonization of the port industry and the maritime sector. Ports serve as central hubs for promoting H2 production and the import/export of renewable energy sources. The North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports project is funded by the EU under the INTERREG North Sea program and aims to establish ports as central hubs for green hydrogen (H2) and power-to-X (PtX) fuels such as methanol and ammonia.
The consortium consists of various partners from industry, science, and public administration. The goal is to plan future hydrogen facilities in four North Sea ports: Brest, Esbjerg, Bremerhaven, and Den Helder. The project is taking a bottom-up approach and involves all relevant stakeholders in the port systems. A key aspect is the development of a groundbreaking “Port Hydrogen Valley Master Plan,” which will serve as a model for other European ports. The ISL is an essential part of this consortium and addresses the handling of hydrogen-based energy carriers and the introduction of hydrogen-based technologies in ports.
