StackPack – Efficiently Stacking Cargo Using the Algorithm

In logistics applications such as CKD assembly in the automotive industry, air freight, or retail, the efficient stacking of irregularly shaped, heterogeneous goods presents a complex challenge. To reduce transportation costs, the available loading volume must be utilized optimally, while simultaneously meeting stability criteria, ensuring load securing, maintaining a low center of gravity, and adhering to the required retrieval sequence for subsequent processes. Conventional solutions typically focus solely on volume optimization, which is why complex packing tasks have so far depended heavily on the experience of individual employees. The StackPack research project addresses these challenges by developing a holistic optimization algorithm that can account for all constraints—from stability and load securing to the correct stacking sequence—and decouples the packing process from individual employee experience.
